Alphabets/Characters in a IAM?

Can we pass alphabets in the calling party number in an IAM ?

I am asking this as the calls that originate from VoIP networks don't always have the calling party number in Digits , in that case how is the calling number treated at the switch where the conversion from VoIP to TDM takes place?
